Adopting an Inclusive Approach to Coaching

Overview

Every individual in this country is uniquely different, with diverse abilities, experiences, and needs. Coaches play a crucial role in shaping the development of participants, not only in their athletic performance but also in how they feel included, valued, and supported within their team environment.

When coaches make inclusivity a priority, it ensures that players remain engaged, motivated, and excited about participating, often leading to becoming lifelong participants.

Ensuring each player feels a sense of belonging promotes a positive team culture, one where every member is eager to contribute and grow.

Considerations

To foster inclusivity from the outset, it is crucial that;

  1. Coaches take time at the beginning of each season to learn about their participants. Understanding each player's background, previous experiences in sport, and any physical, intellectual, or emotional impairments they may have is key. Coaches can gather this information through open conversations with players, parents, or caregivers. This will help coaches to adapt training sessions to meet the individual needs of participants, ensuring that everyone can participate meaningfully.
  2. Coaches understand that about 1 in 4 Kiwis have some form of impairment, and as a coach, it’s essential to recognise that these players are part of your team. By modifying training sessions - whether through simplifying activities, changing the pace of drills, or using adaptive equipment - you can make sure that all players are challenged and supported appropriately.
  3. Inclusivity doesn’t mean isolating players by giving them special attention in a way that makes them feel different. Instead, strive to integrate every player into the team’s overall activities. Inclusion should feel natural, with all players working together, each receiving the support they need without being singled out. This creates a team dynamic that is cohesive, where every player feels they belong and are contributing equally.
