Umpiring & Scoring
Umpiring in Canterbury a family affair

The names Hill and Askari are synonymous with cricket umpiring in Christchurch, with Matthew and Altamash being regulars on the scene for many years, officiating in the EV Power Premier Women’s and OEM Audio Premier Men’s games.

In recent weeks, however, we've seen more Hills and Askaris out in the middle, as the sons of both men have taken their first steps on the umpiring journey.

Inspired by their fathers, teenagers Arshaan Askari, Robert Hill, and Alan Hill have all stepped up to the mark. Initially, they helped their dads, but now they’re making a name for themselves as up-and-coming match officials in their own right.

Alan Hill has watched his dad umpire many games and decided he’d like to give it a try. So far, so good. Alan is enjoying meeting different people and loves being involved in the game.

“I feel really satisfied getting my Level 2 qualification and am looking forward to continuing to improve as an umpire. I really appreciated the training I received from David Henderson, as well as my dad teaching me the laws and how to umpire. The players and captains have been really supportive too—it’s been a positive experience,” he said.

Robert Hill loves playing cricket but has also decided to give umpiring a go, so he can help make the game fair and get a better view of the action.

“Learning to umpire has allowed me to learn more about the rules of the game and how it's played. I’m also pleased I’ll be able to put ‘Level 2 umpire’ on my CV,” he said.

Arshaan began umpiring after completing his Level 1 qualification three years ago, choosing to give something back to the game.

He is a regular umpire for CMCA Twilight Cricket, has umpired the Club 100, the Christchurch Premier League, and the CMCA All Nations Festival.

Arshaan started umpiring on Saturdays with his dad in 2023, initially standing at square leg, but he has since stepped up, recently fully officiating in an EV Power Premier Women’s game earlier this month.

Like Robert and Alan, Arshaan is also working towards his Level 2 qualification and aims to continue umpiring as much as possible when he’s not playing cricket for Christchurch Boys’ High School.

Captains’ reports have highlighted the knowledge and confidence of the trio, with many quick to sing their praises.

Not only are these three young men paving the way toward higher-level umpiring, but they’re also earning a few dollars for their efforts as well!
