MORNING ROUND:

Epsom Girls’ Grammar begun their Gillette Venus campaign today with a win over Otago Girls’ High, on the Bert Sutcliffe Oval. Batting first, Epsom got off to a positive start thanks to openers Elizabeth Buchanan (29) and Anika Tauwhare (29) - putting on 47 runs for the first wicket.

Otago Girls’ regained momentum through captain Isy Parry, who’s off-spin managed to remove both EGGS’ openers and pull the run rate back under control.  Middle order batters Eden Cotton and Mollie Drumm scored a quick flurry of runs towards the end of the innings, helping EGGS to a competitive 121 runs.

In response, Otago Girls’ lost an early wicket, however, captain Parry (29) and No.4 batter Hannah Wilson (19) continued to score at a good rate. Unfortunately for OGHS, the loss of the two Otago U19 reps spurred a flurry of EGGS’ wickets – EGGS eventually winning by 33 runs.

Simi Bajaj (2-15) and Tauwhare (2-6) the best of the EGGS bowlers – both taking key wickets and keeping the run rate down.

Wellington Blaze player Kate Chandler showed her class with a well composed 59 runs at the top of the WGC batting order. She was well supported by Eva Hay (33), together putting on 84 runs for the third wicket and seeing WGC through to 150/5.

Captain Olivia McDonald (2-22) took two important wickets, while opening bowler Ruby Makenham (1-27) bowled economically with good pace.

Waikato enjoyed the perfect start to their response, as openers Makenham (52) and Catherine Hardie (43) put on 107 runs for the first wicket.

At that point, Waikato needed 50 runs from the final 5 overs. Stars with the bat Chandler (2-16) and Hay (1-17) stepped up, proving too difficult to get to the boundary as WGC won by 18 runs.

Epsom Grammar proved themselves as one of the teams to beat this afternoon, claiming a 50-run victory against Waikato Diocesan.

Batting first, EGGS were immediately put under pressure, losing their opening bat to a Ruby Makenham (3-33) delivery. No.3 batter Holly Lightbourne (35) was able to steady the ship for EGGS, before four quick wickets saw the Aucklanders to 77/6.

Lower order batters Emma Hayward (28) and Mollie Drumm (14) put up a fight - able to dig EGGS out of a hole and pushing the total to a very respectable 131/10. Makenham & Olivia McDonald (2-21) the best of the WDS bowling unit.

EGGS were able to back this up with a tight bowling display – none of their bowlers going at more than 4.5 RPO through the second innings. Leg-spinner Mollie Drumm (2-8) and pace bowler Christelle McGuire (1-3) proving particularly effective.

Kate Peddie (24) fought hard for WDS, but the total proved too much – EGGS winning by 50 runs.
